The Black Bear Cubs fifty-cent piece was part of the RCM's ongoing Birds and Wildlife series, which ran through the 1990s and was aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. These pieces were sold in presentation sets and saw virtually no commerce, which accounts for the near-universal gem condition in which they surface today.

KM#286 is occasionally confused with adjacent issues in the series due to inconsistent catalog cross-referencing between Charlton and KM numbers for this run.
