Part of Perth Mint's Lunar Series II, this issue marked the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac cycle — specifically aimed at the collectibles market in mainland China and the broader Asian diaspora. Perth had by this point refined the colored enamel application on its lunar pieces into a reliable production technique, which it had struggled with in earlier series runs.
The "Baby Snake" designation distinguishes it from the larger, higher-denomination Snake issues released the same year under the same series.
