The "CR" designation here refers to a coloured release, with pad printing applied directly to the coin's surface — a technique the Royal Australian Mint has refined considerably since its early coloured issues of the 2000s, when ink adhesion and colour registration were persistent problems. Australia's railway heritage series draws on a network whose origins lie in the colonial-era chaos of incompatible gauges: New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia each built to different specifications, a problem that wasn't fully resolved until the standard gauge line between Sydney and Perth was completed in 1970.
