The RAAF's C-130 Hercules fleet entered Australian service in 1958 and logged decades of unglamorous but operationally critical work — cyclone relief, Antarctic resupply, and the 1975 Saigon evacuation among them. This coin is one of a series issued across 2021 marking the centenary of the RAAF, with individual releases tied to specific aircraft types that defined the service's history. The pad-printing process, applied over a standard copper-nickel blank, allows colour reproduction that conventional die striking cannot achieve — a technique the Royal Australian Mint began deploying more extensively in the 2010s for commemorative circulation issues.
