| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, as sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley for the fourth portrait series. The truncation of the neck is visible at the lower centre, with the engraver's initials 'IRB' incused below. The legend 'ELIZABETH II' arcs along the upper left periphery, while 'AUSTRALIA' and the date '2013' follow the right and lower right rim respectively. The portrait is rendered with fine detail in the hair and tiara, characteristic of Rank-Broadley's naturalistic style. |

The "Year of the Snake" 50-cent piece was part of the Royal Australian Mint's long-running Lunar New Year series, issued to acknowledge Australia's substantial Chinese-Australian community and capitalize on collector demand from Asian markets. The 4th portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, had been in use since 1998 and would remain current until the transition following her death in 2022.
Snake years in the Chinese zodiac cycle fall every twelve years; 2013 was the Year of the Water Snake specifically.
