Part of the Perth Mint's long-running lunar series, this coin falls within the second iteration of that program — Lunar Series II, which runs from 2008 to 2019 and assigns each year an animal from the Chinese zodiac. The Rooster year in the Chinese calendar corresponded with 2017, beginning in late January per the lunisolar reckoning. Perth targets this series heavily at Asian collector markets, where zodiac-year releases carry genuine cultural weight beyond numismatic interest.
The .9999 fineness is worth noting — finer than the original Lunar Series I pieces, a deliberate upgrade made when Series II launched to compete with other sovereign bullion programs on purity.
