The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne were the first held in Australia since Brisbane in 1982, and the Royal Australian Mint issued a twelve-coin 50-cent circulation series to mark them — one of the more ambitious commemorative programs the mint had produced for a domestic sporting event.
