Additional information

Issued the year before the Melbourne Games opened, this coin marked Australia's second time hosting the Commonwealth Games — the first being Brisbane in 1982. The Royal Australian Mint released several commemorative fifty-cent pieces tied to the event, this copper-nickel circulation strike being the most accessible of the series. Melbourne's hosting bid had been won over rival candidate Malaysia in 1999.
