Issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's broader commemorative program for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games — the first Games held in Australia since Brisbane 1982 — this piece honors the hockey competition held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne. Australia's men's side entered as defending champions, having won gold at Manchester 2002, and the women's Hockeyroos carried similarly heavy expectations. The coin circulated alongside eleven other sport-specific fifty-cent pieces in the series, most of which were hoarded immediately and saw little genuine commerce.
