The "pad printing" technique applied here was adopted by the Perth Mint as a way to deposit color directly onto the coin's surface without the laminated plastic overlays used by other mints — a distinction collectors either appreciate for its durability or fault for its flatness compared to traditional enamel. The Rainbow Lorikeet issue was part of the Mint's broader push into the colored wildlife series during the early 2010s, a period when Perth was aggressively expanding its collector market in Asia, where demand for Australian fauna subjects was particularly strong.
