Additional information

New Zealand's "Lord of the Rings" coin program was issued in conjunction with the theatrical release of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, a rare instance of a Pacific nation's circulating-format commemorative series tied directly to a domestic film production. The 2003 issues aligned with the release of The Return of the King. New Zealand Post administered the program rather than the Reserve Bank handling distribution directly, which is why these pieces, though legal tender, were sold in presentation packaging and saw virtually no circulation wear.
