The "Merry Christmas" 50-cent piece was part of New Zealand's brief experiment with seasonal circulation coinage in the early 2000s, issued through the Reserve Bank as a novelty item rather than a conventional circulation strike. New Zealand was simultaneously in the process of deciding whether to abandon its large-format 50-cent coin entirely — a decision that came to fruition in 2006, when the coin was reduced in size and composition as part of a broader currency reform that also eliminated the 5-cent piece.
