Reverse description A naturalistic, finely detailed depiction of a koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is shown seated and clinging to a eucalyptus branch, rendered in high relief with a frosted finish against a matte background field. The animal is portrayed facing left with its characteristic large ears, prominent nose, and clawed forepaws gripping the branch prominently in the foreground. The inscription 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER appears along the left inner border, the Perth Mint's P mintmark is positioned at upper left, and the designer's initials SB appear at lower left within the field.

Additional information

The Koala bullion series launched in 2007 as Perth Mint's answer to the long-dominant Kookaburra program, differentiating itself partly through annual design changes — a policy that drives collector demand beyond pure silver content. The 2009 issue falls in the series' early years, before mintage figures for individual dates were widely tracked with precision, which has made accurate population data difficult to establish retrospectively.
