Australia's Centenary of Federation in 2001 marked exactly one hundred years since the six colonies formally unified under the Commonwealth of Australia Act 1900, passed by the British Parliament and proclaimed on January 1, 1901. The Royal Australian Mint issued a sprawling commemorative program around the anniversary, with state-specific designs distributed across a coin-of-allotment series — this piece being part of the Certificate of Authenticity-accompanied gold proof subset of that release.
The KM#491.1a designation distinguishes the gold proof variant from the standard cupro-nickel circulation issue, a relatively rare instance of a 50-cent face value struck in nearly four troy ounces of .9999 fine gold.
