Issued as part of New Zealand's officially licensed Lord of the Rings coin program tied to the Peter Jackson film trilogy, this piece appeared during the theatrical run of The Two Towers. New Line Cinema's partnership with the New Zealand Mint produced an unusual situation: a sovereign nation's circulating coinage bearing the likeness of a fictional character from a film production shot domestically.
Boromir, killed in the first film, was already dead on screen by the time this coin reached circulation.
