Additional information

El Alamein, fought in two engagements across mid-1942, marked the turning point at which Rommel's Afrika Korps was halted and then driven back permanently. Australian infantry — principally the 9th Division — bore a disproportionate share of the defensive fighting in the First Battle, holding positions along the northern coastal sector while Eighth Army reorganized. Churchill later credited the 9th Division's tenacity at Tel el Eisa and Miteirya Ridge as decisive in preventing a breakthrough to Alexandria.

This coin is part of the RAM's broader Australians at War series running across multiple years, each issue tied to a specific campaign or theatre.
