Obverse description Fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 50 CENTS arcs around the upper field, with the designer's initials IRB truncated at the base of the portrait. The square flan with rounded corners is framed by a beaded border.

Reverse description A naturalistic depiction of a kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) perched facing left on a eucalyptus branch with foliage, rendered in frosted high relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend AUSTRALIAN arcs across the upper field, while the inscription KOOKABURRA / 1/2oz. 999 SILVER / 2004 appears to the right of the bird. The Perth Mint's P mintmark is situated at the lower right, and a beaded border frames the entire design within the square flan.
