Reverse description A bold forward-facing portrait of Aragorn, the fictional ranger and king from J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings', occupies the majority of the field, rendered in detailed relief with long hair and a bearded visage. To the right, a full-length figure of Aragorn in warrior attire is depicted in smaller scale, sword at the ready, accompanied by a curved sword or bow motif in the upper right field. The denomination '50c' appears in the lower centre of the field, flanked by stylised decorative scrollwork. A copyright mark 'ONLP Inc.' is inscribed in the lower right field.

Additional information

Issued as part of New Zealand's official licensing agreement with New Line Cinema during the theatrical run of *The Return of the King*, this coin entered circulation in 2003 alongside a broader series covering characters from the Peter Jackson trilogy. New Zealand's direct involvement in the production — nearly all principal photography took place across the country — made the partnership a natural one for the Reserve Bank.

KM#137 is the standard circulation issue, not a collector proof, meaning examples did pass through tills and pockets during that summer release window.
