| Additional information |
Issued to mark the 1981 marriage of Charles and Diana, this piece appeared eight years after the event — not from commemorative delay, but as part of the Royal Australian Mint's Masterpieces in Silver subscription sets, which repackaged existing and specially prepared dies into annual collector releases throughout the late 1980s. The sets were aimed squarely at the burgeoning retail bullion collector market of that decade, when silver proof packaging became a significant revenue stream for commonwealth mints.
The third portrait of Elizabeth II, by Arnold Machin, had been in use since 1985 on Australian coinage.
