| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a stylised cartographic representation of New Holland, the historical Dutch designation for the Australian continent, rendered in the manner of an early colonial chart. A tall-masted sailing vessel of the First Fleet is shown navigating the waters adjacent to the continent, evoking the 1788 arrival of the British settlement fleet at Botany Bay. The five principal stars of the Southern Cross constellation are positioned above the map. The bicentenary dates 1788–1988 appear prominently in the field, with the compass cardinal points W, S, and E flanking the map, and the legend NEW HOLLAND and denomination FIFTY CENTS completing the design. |
