Additional information

HMS Beagle's first voyage (1826–1830) had nothing to do with Darwin — that came second. The initial expedition, under Pringle Sturt and then Robert FitzRoy, was a hydrographic survey of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego so grueling that the previous captain, Pringle Stokes, shot himself in the head off the Chilean coast. FitzRoy took command mid-voyage at age 23.

Gold-plated iron issues of this type are produced for the collector novelty market and see no monetary circulation in the Solomon Islands.
