| Additional information |
Ponsonby Sound is a remote channel in the far south of Tierra del Fuego, named by Robert FitzRoy during the Beagle voyages of the early 1830s — the same expeditions that carried Charles Darwin. FitzRoy named numerous features of that coastline after British naval and political figures, and the Sound's namesake, Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby, was a distinguished Waterloo veteran who later served as Governor of Malta.
The Solomon Islands has issued coins referencing such geographically obscure British-named locations as a recurring series strategy, with legal tender status providing the technical justification for the denomination.
