Guy Gibson led the 617 Squadron "Dambusters" raid on the Ruhr dams in May 1943, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was killed in September 1944 when his de Havilland Mosquito went down over the Netherlands under circumstances that remain disputed — friendly fire, fuel exhaustion, and enemy action have all been proposed.
Solomon Islands has become a prolific issuer of low-cost commemorative pieces aimed squarely at the collector gift market. Gold-plated iron is the telling detail here: it corrodes at cut edges and exposed surfaces within years.
