Additional information

Australia's 50-cent piece has carried a dodecagonal profile since 1969, when the round version was abandoned after just three years because vending machine operators complained it was too easily confused with the smaller 20-cent coin. The Charles III obverse introduced here marks the first major portrait change on Australian coinage since the transition from Elizabeth II following her death in September 2022 — the first time Australia has changed monarchs on circulating coinage in over seventy years.
