Buster Brown Bucks were promotional scrip issued by McNeil Shoes as part of their licensed use of the Buster Brown character — Richard Outcault's comic strip creation, which Brown Shoe Company acquired the rights to in 1904 and turned into one of the most aggressively marketed children's shoe brands in American history. McNeil operated as a regional participant in that licensing network. These certificates functioned as in-store currency redeemable against purchases, a common mid-century retail loyalty mechanism with no status as legal tender.
The scrip format borrowed heavily from genuine federal currency design, a practice that attracted periodic FTC scrutiny across the industry.
