Obverse description The post-1994 coat of arms of South Africa is rendered in high relief at the centre of the field, featuring a Secretary Bird with outstretched wings above a shield supported by two San Bushmen figures, with wheat stalks framing the base and the motto scroll below. The date 2006 appears in the upper field above the arms. The engraver's initials ALS are incorporated discreetly into the design. The legend SOUTH AFRICA curves along the lower periphery in bold incuse lettering. The overall composition is executed in proof finish with deeply mirrored fields.
