Obverse description The coat of arms of South Africa is centrally depicted in the field, featuring a secretary bird with outstretched wings surmounting a shield bearing two figures in greeting, flanked by ears of wheat and supported by a spear and knobkierie crossed behind the shield. The national motto in the Khoisan language of the ǀXam people, '!KE Eː ǀXARRA ǁKE' (Unity in Diversity), appears on a ribbon at the base of the arms. The date '2014' is inscribed in the upper field above the arms, while the bilingual country name 'Aforika Borwa' (in Sesotho sa Leboa) and 'South Africa' (in English) flank the device along the left and right periphery respectively. The engraver's initials 'ALS' appear in the lower field beneath the coat of arms.

Reverse description The large numeral '50' dominates the upper portion of the field, with the denomination indicator 'c' positioned to the lower right. To the left and lower centre, a finely detailed rendering of a Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise flower) in bloom is depicted, its distinctive spathe, petals, and long narrow leaves rendered in high relief against the plain field. The engraver's initials 'LL' (for Linda Lotriet) are incused in the lower exergue beneath the floral motif. The design is minimal and elegant, with the botanical subject and denomination numerals complementing one another across the coin's surface.
