| Obverse description | The coat of arms of South Africa occupies the central field, depicted in detail with a shield supported by a secretary bird with wings displayed, backed by a spear and a knobkierie, and surmounted by a protea flower. The shield bears a Khoisan-inspired motif of human figures above a rising sun. Below the shield, the motto in the !Ke eː |xarra ||ke legend is inscribed on a ribbon. The date 2023 appears in the upper field, flanked on either side by the bilingual legend AFRIKA-BORWA (Sotho for South Africa), all within the heptagonal coin border. The engraver's initials MJS appear in the lower field. |

| Reverse description | A blue crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), the national bird of South Africa, is depicted in flight with wings fully spread, rendered in fine detail against a plain field. The denomination 50C appears in bold numerals in the lower portion of the field, with the engraver's initials PB visible in the lower left. The design is set within a plain heptagonal border consistent with the coin's seven-sided format. |
