Additional information

Kenya's nickel-plated steel coinage of this period reflects a broader East African shift away from cupro-nickel driven by rising base metal prices in the mid-2000s — the same pressures that forced similar reformulations across the region. The 50 cent denomination had long occupied an awkward economic position in Kenya, its purchasing power eroded to the point where the coin was rarely used in everyday transactions by the time this series was issued.
