| Reverse description | A naturalistic depiction of the Tulliera (Maltese Fleabane, Chiliadenus bocconei), a plant endemic to the Maltese islands, dominates the reverse field with its branching stems, leaves, and small flowers rendered in fine relief. The denomination '50c' is inscribed to the lower right of the plant motif in a clear, upright font. The design occupies virtually the full extent of the flat field within the multi-sided coin border, with no additional legend or peripheral inscription. |

| Additional information |
Malta joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1990, pegging the lira to a basket of currencies as a precondition for eventual EU accession. The 50-cent denomination sat at an awkward middle value during this period — too large for everyday small transactions as inflation crept upward, yet too small for the higher-value purchases that increasingly dominated Maltese commerce. The entire pre-euro coinage series was retired in 2008 when Malta adopted the euro on 1 January, making 1991–2007 the complete and final lifespan of this type.
