| Reverse description | The reverse features a large, naturalistically rendered sprig of the Maltese Rock-Centaury (Palaeocyanus crassifolius), the national plant of Malta, its lobed leaves and thistle-like flower heads filling the field in high relief. The denomination numeral '50' accompanied by the lowercase letter 'c' for cents appears to the lower right of the floral motif. The design is framed by a continuous beaded border, with no additional legend in the field. |

| Additional information |
Malta's 1986 coinage series was issued under the second republic, following the 1974 constitutional revision that severed the last formal ties to the British Crown. The Central Bank of Malta had been established only in 1968, and coinage policy through the 1980s reflected a deliberate effort to build a distinctly Maltese numismatic identity independent of Commonwealth conventions.
KM#81 is not a scarce piece by any measure, but survivors in uncirculated condition are less common than mintage figures suggest — the 50-cent denomination saw heavy ATM and vending use during this period.
