Andorra issued coinage under episcopal authority for centuries but had no internationally recognized sovereign currency until its 2011 monetary agreement with the EU — making this 2006 piece part of a transitional series of unofficial collector issues struck before Andorra gained formal rights to mint euro-denominated coinage. Benedict XVI, elected in April 2005, appears here as one of Andorra's two co-princes, a constitutional role held jointly by the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state since the 1278 paréage treaty.
