Zurgena is a small municipality in Almería province, and like hundreds of other Spanish towns, its local council issued fractional paper currency during the Civil War after metallic coin effectively disappeared from circulation. These municipal emergency emissions — known collectively as papel moneda local — were produced under desperate improvised conditions, often on whatever paper stock was available, with a rubber stamp serving as the sole authentication. The Consejo Municipal issues from this corner of Andalucía saw heavily loyalist Republican territory throughout the conflict.
Gari Mon#1656-B suggests a variant within the Zurgena series, likely distinguished by a stamp color or ink difference from the A type.
