Xerta is a small municipality in the Terres de l'Ebre region of Tarragona, and this 50 céntimos note is one of the thousands of local emergency issues produced during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's decree of 1937 authorizing municipalities to issue small-denomination paper to address a catastrophic shortage of coin. The Consell Municipal — the wartime administrative body — would have issued these in very limited quantities for purely local use.
Turró catalogues over 3,000 such municipal issues, and survivorship is erratic. Notes from small Catalan towns like Xerta were printed in tiny runs, often on whatever paper was available, and few were ever redeemed.
