Vinaròs — the Castellón coastal town spelled "Vinaroz" in Castilian — issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War as Republican-controlled municipalities across Spain scrambled to address a chronic shortage of small change. The central government's inability to supply adequate coinage in the Republican zone forced hundreds of local bodies to print their own, a phenomenon that produced thousands of distinct types between 1936 and 1939.

The Gari Monereo catalogue remains the standard reference for these Spanish Civil War local issues, and the 1639-A designation suggests at least one variant exists within the type.
