One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes — cartrons — issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War after the Republican government's chronic shortage of fractional coinage left local commerce effectively paralyzed. The Generalitat had authorized these local issues in 1937, and virtually every ajuntament of any size printed something. Vilassar de Dalt, a small coastal town in the Maresme comarca north of Barcelona, was no exception.

El Secretariat Català printed for numerous municipalities simultaneously, which sometimes produced subtle shared design elements across otherwise unrelated issues. These notes were only valid within the issuing municipality and became worthless almost immediately after Franco's forces consolidated control of Catalonia in early 1939.
