Vilanova de la Barca is a small municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia, and like hundreds of comparable towns it issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's 1936 decree authorizing local authorities to produce small-denomination notes to offset the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. These municipal emissions were produced locally, often by whoever had access to a press, a rubber stamp, and suitable card stock.
The Turró catalogue remains the primary reference for these Catalan Civil War locals, and #2830 is among the less-documented emissions — survival rates for small-town issues from this period are highly uneven, with many surviving only in single-digit quantities.
