Vilanova d'Escornalbou is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian towns during the Civil War, its ajuntament stepped into the monetary vacuum left when the Republic's coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These locally issued paper fractions, generically called "moneda de necessitat" or "guerra civil locals," were an improvised but legally tolerated response to a genuine small-change crisis that hit markets and wages hard from mid-1936 onward.
Printed by Imprenta Solé in Tarragona, a commercial press that handled several such municipal commissions in the province.
