During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone faced acute small-change shortages as silver and copper coinage disappeared from circulation almost immediately after July 1936. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities — many of them tiny — responded by issuing their own emergency fractional paper, a phenomenon so widespread that the Generalitat eventually attempted to regulate it. Vilallonga de Ter, a small village on the upper Ter river in Ripollès, was among them.
The Cooperativa d'Arts Gràfiques in nearby Ripoll printed for numerous local issuers across the comarca during this period, which is why the production quality is relatively consistent across notes of very different municipal origins.
