Vilafant is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia, a few kilometers north of Figueres. During the Spanish Civil War, the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage in the Republican zone forced hundreds of municipalities — including the most obscure — to print their own emergency paper. Vilafant's issues fall into this category: hyperlocal, produced in tiny quantities, and intended for use only within the township's own commerce.

Turró's catalog remains the essential reference for these Catalan municipal emissions, and the fact that this piece has a dedicated listing speaks to its documentation, not its abundance. Small-run municipal notes from villages of this size were often printed on whatever card stock was locally available, which accounts for the heavier substrate.
