Verges is a small municipality in the Baix Empordà comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, its local government issued emergency fractional currency after the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized municipal and corporate emergency issues from 1936 onward, which produced an enormous variety of locally printed pieces — Turró catalogs over 3,000 distinct types from this period alone.

Issues from villages as small as Verges were printed in very limited quantities and rarely traveled far. Survivors tend to show heavy use or, conversely, turn up uncirculated from unissued remainders.
