Vara de Rey is a small municipality in the province of Cuenca, Castile–La Mancha. This 50 céntimos piece belongs to the wave of emergency local paper money — known in Spain as billetes locales or moneda fiduciaria — issued by hundreds of municipalities and cooperatives during the Civil War after the Republic's metallic coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely by late 1936. Small-denomination coins were hoarded, melted, or simply ceased to circulate as the war fractured supply chains and public confidence simultaneously.
The official stamp was the issuing authority's primary — often only — anti-counterfeiting measure. For a village-level issuer, it was also a practical necessity: proper intaglio or lithographic security printing was simply not available to them.
