Vallvert d'Urgell is a tiny municipality in the comarca of l'Urgell, Lleida province, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Spanish Civil War it issued its own fractional emergency currency when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation after 1936. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local issues but exercised almost no control over design or production quality, which is why this note was printed at Imprenta Popular in Bellpuig — a small commercial press in the nearest market town — rather than through any centralized facility.
At 55 × 45 mm, it is among the smallest format municipal issues catalogued by Turró, printed on thick card stock precisely because that substrate survived handling better than standard paper at such a small cutting size.
