Vallmoll is a small municipality in the Tarragona province of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — a direct consequence of the hoarding and disappearance of metallic coin from circulation after July 1936. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local councils to produce these moneda local issues, which created an extraordinary proliferation of hyper-local paper: thousands of distinct issues from villages with populations sometimes under a thousand.
At 50×42 mm, this piece sits at the smaller end of even the Civil War municipal issues — closer to a thick paper token than a conventional banknote.
