Vallcebre is a small mountain municipality in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, with a population that likely never exceeded a few hundred during the Civil War years. That such a minor settlement issued its own fractional currency in 1937 reflects just how completely the Republican monetary system had fragmented — hundreds of Catalan municipalities, unable to obtain sufficient small change from Barcelona, simply printed their own. The Generalitat tolerated it rather than endorsed it.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled an enormous volume of these local emergency issues during 1936–38, which is why the printing quality across Turró's Catalan series is surprisingly consistent even for the smallest towns.
