One of hundreds of emergency fractional notes issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain small-denomination coinage in circulation forced towns to print their own. Vallbona d'Anoia, a village in the Anoia comarca with a population measured in the hundreds, issued these locally rather than rely on the regional supply organized through the Generalitat.
The thick card stock was a practical choice — thin paper disintegrated quickly in daily use at the market or the tavern. Most surviving examples from villages this small exist in tiny quantities simply because so few were printed to begin with.
