Valdepeñas is a wine-producing town in Ciudad Real province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities it issued its own emergency fractional currency during 1936–37 after the Civil War severed normal coin supply lines. The Consejo Municipal — the Republican-controlled local council — authorized these low-denomination notes to keep daily commerce moving when silver and copper had been hoarded or melted.
Printing was contracted to Litografía Félix Martínez in Valencia, a working commercial press that handled a substantial volume of these wartime municipal issues from across Republican-held territory. Valencia's role as the seat of the Republican government from November 1936 made it a natural hub for such work.
