Tarancón is a small Castilian market town in Cuenca province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities in the summer of 1936, its ayuntamiento faced an immediate practical crisis: the outbreak of the Civil War had caused small-denomination metallic coinage to vanish almost overnight as people hoarded it. These locally printed fractional notes — emergency fiduciary issues known as moneda de guerra or billetes municipales — were the ad hoc solution, authorized under Republican government decrees permitting local authorities to plug the circulation gap.
Printed by Imprenta Antona, the town's own press, and validated by an official municipal stamp rather than any sophisticated security measure. The Gari Monetary catalog classifies this as issue 1402-A, implying at least one variant exists within the Tarancón 50 céntimos series.
