Sort is a small town in the Pallars Sobirà comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish municipalities, its local council began issuing its own fractional paper money after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936 — a direct response to the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation, hoarded by a panicked public. The Consell Municipal printed through Josep Güell's press in the nearby town of La Pobla de Segur, a practical choice given the limited infrastructure of the Pyrenean interior.

The official stamp was the primary — often the only — anti-counterfeiting measure these councils could manage. Turró documents hundreds of such emissions; this one, catalogued as #2396, represents the economic improvisation of a municipality making do with whatever was at hand.
