Selgua is a small village in the Huesca province of Aragon — population in the hundreds — and like hundreds of other Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when coins vanished from circulation almost entirely in 1936–37. The Republican government had authorized local councils to fill the gap, producing a sprawl of hyper-local paper that was legally valid only within the issuing municipality's boundaries.
The Gari Montaña catalog documents well over a thousand such Aragonese emissions, which gives some sense of how atomized the circulating medium had become in Republican-held territory by mid-conflict.
